Cubic Meter (CBM) is the universal volume metric in freight logistics, LCL consolidation, and FCL container booking. Accurate CBM calculation is essential for shipping quotes, container space planning, and customs compliance.

1. Standard International CBM Formulas

In packaging engineering and global trade, outer carton dimensions are typically measured in centimeters (cm):

CBM = (Length cm × Width cm × Height cm) ÷ 1,000,000 × Total Cartons

Cubic Feet Conversion: 1 CBM ≈ 35.3147 CUFT (Cubic Feet)

2. Chargeable Weight in Air & Ocean Freight

Carriers apply the rule of greater weight, comparing actual gross weight with dimensional volume weight to determine shipping freight:

  • Air Freight / Express: Volumetric Weight (kg) = CBM × 167 (using 6000 divisor) or CBM × 200 (using 5000 divisor)
  • Ocean LCL: Typically evaluated at 1 CBM = 1,000 kg. If volume exceeds weight ratio, cargo is billed as volumetric freight

3. Broken Stowage & Effective Container Capacity

Physical container volume cannot be 100% utilized. Due to carton bulge, pallet clearance, and packing gaps, realistic container loading efficiency ranges between 80% and 85%. Always reserve 10% to 15% safety buffer before booking containers.
