Understanding Bleed
Mastering layout margins, trims, and why bleed exists.
What is Bleed?
Bleed is the part of the artwork that extends beyond the trimmed size, absorbing cutting tolerance. Without it, trimming can expose white slivers along the edge and ruin the look.
❌ No Bleed
Artwork stops exactly at the trim line; a ±1-2 mm cutting tolerance leaves white edges
✅ Correct Bleed
The background extends to the bleed line (+3 mm), so wherever the blade lands the image is complete
Standard Setup
Business Card Example
• Trim size: 90 mm × 54 mm
• Artwork size (with bleed): 96 mm × 60 mm (+3 mm on each side)
• Safe area: 84 mm × 48 mm (3 mm inset — keep key content inside)
A4 Flyer
• Trim size: 210 mm × 297 mm
• Artwork size (with bleed): 216 mm × 303 mm
• Special finishing such as saddle stitching may need 5 mm bleed
Common Mistakes and Fixes
Mistake: a black border sitting on the trim line
Even with correct bleed, cutting tolerance makes the border look uneven. Remove it, or move it 3 mm inward.
Mistake: key text too close to the edge
Text, logos and other key elements should sit at least 3 mm from the trim line so they are not cut off.
Mistake: exporting a PDF without bleed
You must tick "include bleed" or "bleed marks" on export, or the printer receives a file at trim size.
Checklist
- Background colors and images extend to the bleed line (3 mm outside trim)
- Key content sits inside the safe area (3 mm inside trim)
- File size = trim size + 6 mm (3 mm on every side)
- "Include bleed" is ticked when exporting the PDF
- Confirm with the printer whether crop marks are required
